Day 3 - Europe 2013

We visited the government district of London including Parliament, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Horse Guard and Westminster Abbey.

We toured the Winston Churchill war room, an underground bunker used to direct the British troops during World War II. It is amazing to think that the heads of the government were hidden here, and a direct hit from the nightly bombings by the Germans would have probably destroyed the bunker.

We then took a driving tour of London. We went by Harrod's and other popular stores. We also drove through various communities and our tour guide, Keith, gave us background on each community, the royalty and aristocracy. We stopped at the Royal Albert Hall and a beautiful statue honoring Albert. We then visited the outside of St. Paul's Cathedral. We also made a quick stop at a Natural History Museum and walked through a dinosaur exhibit.

The entire group had fish and chips for dinner and then walked to the Millenial Bridge. This bridge was apparently in a scene from the Harry Potter movies. We also learned that it opened for 1 day and was closed immediately due to the swaying that occurred from pedestrians walking across it, which was its intended purpose. It opened again 18 months later after German engineers found ways to stabilize it. We also could see the Globe Theatre from the bridge.

We closed our day by visiting three different shopping areas and enjoyed the crowds, street performers and various shops. We visited Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Picadilly Circus.

Back at the hotel many of the adults gathered to visit, including Dave, and we discussed London and the many differences between the UK and the US.
