I was with God and with the devil. And I reached out for God.

The recent rescue of the trapped miners in Chile has been amazing to watch unfold. Each of those men have stories and lives forever changed from their 69 day ordeal. Some notable excerpts from news coverage:

  • Old fashioned cables, pulleys, rope and retractable wheels bringing Florencio Avalos to the surface as family and crowd wait his ascension after 69 days.
  • The 2nd miner rescued was shouting for joy when he reached the surface and handed out souvenir rocks to his rescuers. He said "I think I had extraordinary luck. I was with God and with the devil. And I reached our for God."
  • The last miner to be rescued was the shift foreman whose leadership helped the men survive the first two and a half weeks without outside contact. They made 48 hours of rations last for that first 2 1/2 weeks.
  • The ninth miner, the oldest at 63, dropped to his knees after he emerged, bowed his head in prayer and clutched the Chilean flag. His wife pulled him up from the ground and embraced him.
  • This type of event also brings the synical or sordid side of life to light as well:
